This piece depicts an epic battle outside a castle's walls, with a courageous warrior maiden in the center fighting for her life. She is not necessarily looking at the viewer, but rather trying to be aware of all her surroundings and not be overwhelmed by the scene around her. Note she has been pierced by an arrow, so whether she survives or not is left up to the viewer...for now.
After submitting some work for their consideration, to my surprise Heavy Metal Illustrated wrote me back. I didn't think I'd get a response so soon, so I simply forgot it and moved on to other projects. Thankfully, they were very impressed with this particular piece and chose it to appear in their July 2005. They treated me very respectfully and I am most grateful for their efforts to show my work to a wider audience.

I love it!
But sadly, I think that battle will be her last one. She has been badly it by that arrow in her hip. That wound will seriously limit her mobility during the battle. Now, her position is charged by a horde of angry orcs, and she is at the first row in the ranks. She looks over her shoulder to give a last glance at her teammate. She about to meet her fate in the battlefield and she know it. This is why I can see some sadness on her eyes.
